Replying to: Wool by Hugh Howey

Reviewed by Angela Thomson of Random House Struik.

I realise that dystopian fiction is not for everyone and I certainly climbed into my proof copy of Wool by Hugh Howey with long teeth. I was expecting the usual dystopian set-up: soupy, porridgey gruel for every meal; dark, dank, cramped living quarters; deranged citizens driven mad by their crappy lives and lack of hope; and dreary grey clothing made from rat hair or the like. To be completely honest, these things are in the book in some small measure but somehow Howey presents them in a way that is palatable, nay enjoyable!. The story is creative, convoluted (without being annoying), mysterious, gripping; and manages to defy belief and remain credible at the same time. No lacklustre, depressed characters here – despite their limited world Howey’s characters burst off the page, fully-formed, engaging, and full of purpose.

As you churn through one section of the proof after the next you are irrevocably drawn into the story, you become completely engaged in the lives of the characters, you care about what happens to them and you hope that the outcome will be good. And happily, thrillingly, unexpectedly you are given good cause to hope. This is a story that has the potential to end well and one is assured of that even in the most dire of events. Despite not being a fan of this genre at all, I LOVED this book and cannot wait for more people to read it.

I cannot encourage you enough… give this extraordinary, out-of-this-world, truly exceptional book a read. You will not regret it.

About the book:

In a ruined and hostile landscape, in a future few have been unlucky enough to survive, a community exists in a giant underground silo. Inside, men and women live an enclosed life full of rules and regulations, of secrets and lies. To live, you must follow the rules. But some don't.

If the lies don’t kill you, the truth will. An epic story of life, love and survival at all odds and one of the most-talked and anticipated books of the year.
