Shadow by Carel van der Merwe (You review)

Shadow by Carel van der Merwe (You review)

Taken from the review done by John Phillips of You magazine.

Van der Merwe revisits Paul du Toit, a former Special Forces operative whom fans got to know in his previous offerings, No Man’s Land and Shark. After years spent living in London with his Czech girlfriend, Monica, Paul is still unable to fully embrace his adopted country or commit to his relationship. He inhabits a strange twilight world – until Monica falls pregnant and, rather than face the fact, he travels back to SA on one last mission.

Shadow offers an insightful look at just how much SA has metamorphosed while the hordes of ex-pats living overseas weren’t looking. A thriller in the Deon Meyer style, it builds the tension steadily courtesy of Van der Merwe’s taut prose.

About the book:

Paul du Toit settled in the United Kingdom after leaving under a cloud ten years before. Now he is divorced and middle-aged, and bogged down in a boring job and a floundering relationship. He therefore readily accepts a straightforward – or so he thinks – assignment from a wealthy London financier that takes him back to South Africa. But the country has changed, and the waters are treacherous. Suddenly Paul has to battle not only the shadows of his own life, but also the hidden powers that control South Africa.
