Spoil Mom this Mother's Day with a Good Book!

Spoil Mom this Mother's Day with a Good Book!

Moms are super special and while we can spoil them on their birthdays and at Christmas, there’s nothing quite like a day dedicated especially to our hard working, ever caring moms! This Sunday is Mother’s Day and we’ve got a great selection of reads that will make the perfect gift for any type of mother.

{For moms who love to cook}

Bitten by Sarah Graham is a collection of unpretentious, everyday recipes. Bitten is also the subject of Sarah’s very own show, Sarah Graham Cooks Cape Town. The first episode aired yesterday on SABC 3. Make sure you tune in next week Sunday at 16:00 for episode two to watch Sarah bring to life some of her fabulous recipes in a gorgeous Le Creuset equipped kitchen!

For busy moms (aren’t they all?) who love to whip up quick and delicious meals for the family we’ve got Fuss-free Suppers by Jenny Kay and Elinor Storkey. Also available in Afrikaans as Japtrap-aandetes. And for the baking extraordinaire, why not get mom The Ultimate Snowflake Collection by Heilie Pienaar (which is also available in Afrikaans as Die Uitsonderlike Snowflake Versameling). It’s filled with a range of quick and easy recipes, from classic favourites to new and exciting treats. Tea Time by Jackie Brooks is also on our perfect-for-moms-who-bake gift list.

Confessions of a Hungry Woman by Sam Woulidge features 45 recipes, each one tried and tested by Sam herself and it will inspire and delight both the novice cook and the seasoned professional. With its beautiful photography and Sam’s honest and witty writing, what more could mom ask for?

{For moms who love a good crime thriller}

Local lass Jassy Mackenzie’s new Jade de Jong thriller, Pale Horses and the latest James Patterson thriller, Alex Cross, Run are both a sure bet to satisfy those moms who love a good crime thriller with  white-hot speed, relentless drama, and hairpin turns. The ultimate mix of suspense and thrill!

{For moms who love a little romance}

You can’t go wrong with the Fifty Shades Trilogy, especially as millions of women (and men!) around the world are talking about. It’s super sexy and completely addictive. But if you want something along the same lines that’s not Fifty Shades, how about local offering, Folly. Emma Caine is a true heroine and a character that is funny, self-doubting but strong at the same time. Think a South Africa Bridget Jones – but who takes a more extreme path when faced with a more extreme situation! The Story of X will also fill the Fifty Shades hole.

{For moms who love fiction}

With so many good books to choose from it’s hard to pick our favourite fiction reads to offer for mom this Mother’s Day. We’ve narrowed it down to these fabulous books:

Lessons in Husbandry by award-winning local author Shaida Kazie Ali explores the life of a Muslim woman with two husbands and The Spiral House by Claire Robertson is an extraordinary South African novel that twists together two stories, set 200 years apart.

Oprah recommends The Twelve Tribes of Hattie (and we do too!) and making waves in the UK is Kate Atkinson’s latest offering, Life After Life, about a woman who lives through the most turbulent events of the 20th century and asks: What if you had the chance to live your life again and again, until you finally got it right?

Sophie Kinsella’s new novel Wedding Night is a fun, light-hearted read about best friends who tie the knot after making a pact to get married if they were both still single at thirty and Julie Cohen’s Dear Thing is the story of two mothers and one baby who belongs to both of them, and which only one of them can keep.

{For mom’s who love something a little different}

Jenny Hobbs’s hilarious crime-thriller spoof, Napoleon Bones, is a smorgasbord of delectable characters. This is a Cape Town you won’t find in any tourist book.

Lean in by Sheryl Sandberg - Facebook COO and one of Fortune magazine's Most Powerful Women in Business - takes a look at women in the workplace and their will to lead. perfect for working moms!

A Gift of Hope is a moving and inspirational true story by bestselling author, Danielle Steel who took to the streets with a small team to help the homeless of San Francisco. In this unflinchingly honest memoir, the famously private author speaks out publicly for the first time about her work among the most desperate members of society.

And finally, if mom loves the gardens of the Cape then Kirstenbosch Journal is an elegant visual diary that offers 100 lined pages for writing and reflection.

See, there’s something special for every type of mother, now you just have to make the difficult choice of what to spoil her with!
