Succeed Under Pressure by Gary Bailey

Succeed Under Pressure by Gary Bailey

Succeed under Pressure is based on Gary Bailey’s highly successful business talks, which are largely inspired by Sir Alex Ferguson’s leadership abilities as manager of Manchester United.

Extract from the book:

Parallel to dealing with difficult individuals, a manager has to maintain contentment in the squad: it is crucial to remain firm, make tough decisions and retain authority while keeping the support and loyalty of the players as individuals and as a group. And this must all be done under relentless public scrutiny, which so ruthlessly raises the level of expectation of teams, players and managers, and in turn dramatically shortens the lifespan of managers in particular. Add in the financial penalties of not making the Champions League, qualifying for the Europa League, or staying in the Premiership, La Liga or Serie A, for example, and no manager ever has true job security. Even Sir Alex hasn’t been immune to this; nor have the more established of his contemporaries, including Arsène Wenger. At some point they are all subjected to the daily round of media speculation and gossip.

In short, then, football managers live life in the crosshairs of a trigger-happy firing squad. In that context, it seems almost churlish to describe facing a penalty as a pressurising situation. It’s tense, certainly, but even if you pull off the save, there are still 10 other players who can make a crucial mistake or do something silly for which the manager ultimately carries the can.
